How to Take Photos That Sell Your Horse πΈ
Photo above taken by Miss Kayellebee Photography (me) , the original photo had some background distractions, but we were able to remove those and put onto a grey background so then your focus is fully on the horse for sale.
Sometimes itβs impossible to remove all background distractions, but if your able to limit them it certainly helps when you go to create a sale flyer.
1. Conformation (the must-have shot)
This is your most important image.
How to do it right:
Β· Horse standing square (all 4 legs even)
Β· Shot from the side at mid-body height
Β· Head slightly up, ears forward (alert but relaxed)
Β· Use a plain, uncluttered background (fence line, trees, arena)
π This is the photo serious buyers judge first.
2. Action Shots (show ability)
Buyers donβt just want to hear what your horse can do β they want to see it.
Include:
Discipline-specific shots (jumping, polocrosse, dressage, etc.)
Clean, balanced moments (not mid-stumble or awkward stride)
Rider neat and not distracting
π This builds confidence and credibility instantly.
β¨ Why Good Photos Help You Sell Faster
1. First impressions = everything
Most buyers scroll quickly. A sharp, professional photo makes them stop and click.
2. Builds trust
Clear, honest images show youβre not hiding anything β this reduces back-and-forth questions.
3. Increases perceived value
A well-presented horse can look worth more, even if nothing else changes.
4. Attracts serious buyers
Good photos filter out time-wasters and bring in people who are already interested.
5. Shares better online
Great images get more engagement on Facebook pages β meaning more reach without extra cost.
Invest in a Photographer (itβs worth it)
This is something many people overlook π
A professional equine photographer knows angles, timing, and lighting to make your horse look its absolute best
They capture those split-second action shots that are almost impossible to get yourself
Their images instantly make your ad look more professional and trustworthy
π Itβs not just photos β itβs marketing your horse properly
Also important:
It is 100% worth purchasing the professional action shots taken at events
These are often your horseβs best performance images
β οΈ Important legal note:
Watermarked photos cannot legally be used in sale ads.
If you didnβt purchase the image or donβt have written permission from the photographer, you should not use it.
β‘ Quick Pro Tips (these make a BIG difference)
Shoot in early morning or late afternoon (soft light = no harsh shadows)
Keep your horse clean and well-presented (plait if appropriate)
Use a good phone or camera β but focus on lighting over gear
Avoid clutter: no bins, cars, messy yards in background
Take lots of photos and choose the best (donβt settle for average)
