For Uma Vanderwaal, being a horse sports photographer is about far more than simply taking photos β€” it’s about capturing moments that truly mean something.

Standing on the sidelines with her camera, Uma isn’t just watching a chukka or a run unfold. She’s witnessing the result of countless early mornings, long training days, setbacks, determination, and the dedication it takes to bring both horse and rider to that moment. In a split second, she freezes that effort in time, creating images that riders can hold onto long after the moment has passed.

Every ride tells its own story. Every partnership between horse and rider is unique, and that individuality is what Uma strives to reflect through her work. Her photography focuses on stripping away distractions and minimising background noise so the true connection, effort, and emotion between horse and rider becomes the centre of the image. The result is photographs that feel real, personal, and meaningful to the people in them.

Uma’s journey behind the camera began years ago while competing in eventing, riding a big Thoroughbred gelding in 2* One Day Events. It was along the sidelines of cross-country coursesβ€”camera in handβ€”that she first started observing the sport from a different perspective. Watching, learning, and capturing those moments sparked a passion that would grow into what she does today.

Over time, her path has led her deeper into the western horse world, where she continues to capture the grit, partnership, and spirit that define equestrian sport.

Despite the growth of her photography, Uma still sees herself as that same person on the sideline β€” simply with a deeper appreciation for the moments she’s capturing.

Because to her, it’s never just a photo.
It’s someone’s moment. Someone’s journey. Someone’s story.
